Successful Living: How to balance Health and Work

Health: Who's got time for it? If you know what's good for you (and your finances) you will make time for it. Health is your most valuable asset. Without it, all the money in the world won't have much value. That's why an investment advisor like me is writing about how, in todays environment of longer commutes, shorter staffs, instant communications, voice mail, faxes and fast food on the go, as well as social and family obligations, you need to pay attention to your health.

Of course, I dont know your specific situation, but chances are there are at least some similarities between yours and mine. So maybe some of the ways I have found to integrate taking care of my health into my routine will assist you to do the same. However you do it, I guarantee it will be one of the best investments you will make.

Life as a whole can be overwhelming, so I divide it up into smaller, more manageable pieces. Every 24-hour period represents a mini-life to me, which I want to fill with things I have-to-do and, more importantly, things I want-to-do.

I am an investment advisor, specializing in no-load mutual fund investments, and have owned and operated my company for the past 20 years. Besides doing extensive research so I can effectively manage the millions of dollars of clients assets I am responsible for, I write and publish two weekly investment updates, a monthly newsletter, various investment articles, and handle 15,000+ subscribers to my free internet publications. In addition, I am a husband and an older parent of a 7-year old boy.

Though my plate is pretty full, over my career I have developed a lifestyle which balances my health and work very well, thereby making me a more relaxed and productive person.

Heres how my 24-hour mini-life works.

After working at the office in the morning, at 11:30 sharp I head to the fitness center for my 90-minute lunchtime workout. Afterward, I grab a nutritious sandwich and a health drink, and by shortly after 1 pm Im back at the office.

Thanks to my exercise regimen the edge has been taken of and Im relaxed knowing that I already have attended to my health needs. I may be physically a little tired, but mentally I feel very sharp, so the afternoon is my most productive time. Since I generally enjoy my work, it's okay if my work day extends into the evening. I feel good!

After a leisurely dinner with family and some play time with my son, Im ready for my ultimate physical and mental relaxation ritual. Since I have always chosen to live in communities with facilities such as pool and spa, around 8 pm I head out for a wonderful hour or so of decompression time. That includes a 45-minute soak in my spa, a dip in the cold pool and a shower. Afterwards I stretch out in the lounge chair looking at the stars in a cloudless Southern California sky and enjoying my favorite adult beverage.

This is the time I can think about projects, things I want to do or simply muse about life. No interruptions of any kind. I have enjoyedor at least survivedanother day and I feel balanced and in harmony.

I try to keep my routine pretty much the same every day with a couple of exceptions. Tuesdays I usually play a morning round of golf with a couple of clients. While I dont consider golf exercise, its mentally very relaxing because by the very nature of the game I am forced to slow down.

Saturday mornings, its tennis with the boys. After a leisurely lunch with good conversation and a lot of laughter, I head to the office for around 3 hours of work. Again, Im far more relaxed when tackling spreadsheets or responding to e-mails after having exercised.

Sundays, I answer some e-mails from home, but spend most of the time with my son doing a variety of athletic things.

By Sunday night Im back in the spa considering the week. Usually I can say that every one of my days indeed was filled with things I had to do as well as things I wanted to do. I look forward to the next morning when I get to start all over again.

Here are some things you can do to get into a similar rhythm:

1. Try to live close to work to avoid long, stressful commutes.
2. Join a fitness center near work and negotiate with your boss to extend your lunch to 90 minutes. Offer to work a half hour late to make up the time.
3. If you have a long commute, dont waste time in homebound traffic. Go to the fitness center after work and get on the road after the traffic has cleared.
4. If you have no other choice and you are a morning person, get to the gym before work.

Once youve been able to balance work and health, I can promise that the benefits you enjoyincluding financial thanks to greater productivitywill have you wondering why you didn't start sooner.

Tips for a Healthy and Balanced Physical Body

Your body is the only vehicle you have been given for this ride called Life. Taking good care of your body will ensure a longer, happier ride. The following tips integrate your Body, Mind, and Spirit, which are all required to maintain a healthy, happy body!

1.Healthy diet and nutrition.

Health care practitioners will tell you that you have to provide your physical body with high quality fuel if you want it to run properly. Eat a healthy, chemical-free diet high in vital nutrients. Take the herbal and vitamin supplements that will support you in your good health.

2.Get adequate rest.

Get the appropriate amount of uninterrupted sleep you need to engage your REM patterns. REM sleep is your nervous systems way of healing and refueling your body. Also, if youre feeling overly sluggish, take a short nap or sit and rest. Chronic sleep and sluggishness problems should be reported to your health care provider.

3.Stay focused in the present moment.

Feelings of regret or worry about a past event, or worry and anxiety about an upcoming future event are not only a waste of your precious life time. They also add stress to the body, which makes you more susceptible to disease. Stay present and focused on the beauty and gifts this moment is offering you!

4.Physical fitness/exercise.

Exercise is known to help you live a longer and healthier life. The body needs to stay in action and movement. Move it, or lose it!

5.Mental exercise and stimulation.

A healthy physical body includes a sound and sharp mind. Keep challenging your mind to expand, grow, learn, experience, decipher, and explore. Use it, or lose it!

6.Meditate.

Not only is meditation simple and fun, it also has been known to reduce your heart rate, reduce your stress level, help you become present in this moment, increase your feelings of peace, serenity, joy, and spiritual faith. This all does the body good!

7.Surround yourself with a great support system - family, friends.

Keep yourself surrounded from every side with positive-minded, healthy people who are on YOUR team - People who will care for, support, love, respect, and appreciate you.

8.Laugh often.

Recent studies are showing the significance of how laughter, fun, and mirth help keep people healthy, as well as heal sick bodies. Everyone really is a unique, hilarious person. Look for the hilarity in every situation and keep laughing.

9.Keep your thoughts positive.

What you put out does come back. So if you want to feel and look great, monitor your thoughts closely to ensure that you are thinking only positive, forwarding thoughts. If you catch yourself thinking a negative thought, simply turn it around into a positive thought.

10.Deal with your emotions. Do not stifle them.

If you are avoiding dealing with any emotions that have cropped up in your life, what do you think you are doing to your poor body? It has to store this emotional energy somewhere. Face your feelings, express them healthfully, and whatever you do, stop stuffing them down in to an oozing, black hole of ill health!

Natural Health -- The First Law

Health is a measure of how well your cells function. To be at your best means that each cell must be functioning at its best. Do you know what it takes to have all your cells fully operational?

There is a direct connection between the vitality of your cells and the things you put into your body. Your body was made to receive the nutrients it needs from the foods you eat. The availability of nutrients at the cellular level determines your overall health. This is the first law of natural health.

But before you begin on any nutritional program or diet, ask yourself the following questions.

In what soil was this food grown?
Under what conditions did it grow?
What is the breeding behind the plants producing this food?
Health-giving foods have certain characteristics. You can easily digest them and you gain many more nutrients than you expend on digestion, assimilation and distribution. These foods are called "nutrient dense foods."

Our plant breeders and our agricultural practices have been robbing us of these nutrient dense foods. Because easily digested and nutrient loaded food supports life all life such foods do not keep long on grocery shelves. Economic pressures have caused us to develop long keeping, nutrient poor varieties of our commercial food plants. Our reliance upon commercial fertilizers, which replace only three or four of the 70 or more minerals needed for optimal growing conditions, has led to mineral deficient soils that produce nutrient poor plants.

It is hard to find commercially available foods that qualify as nutrient dense. While being a step up from the conventionally grown vegetables, even "organic" foods are not necessarily grown on living, mineral rich soils.

Did you know that an analysis of the USDA Food Composition Charts shows an overall 26% decline in the average nutrient value of all our foods over the last 20 years? This decline in nutrition is a continuation of a 75-year trend.

What can you do? Here are two steps I recommend.

1.If you are a gardener you can cultivate your food crops in a way that ensures maximum nutrient loading. Spend the time to take care of your soil by adding in living compost, beneficial plant matter and soil supplements that provide a naturally balanced, broad range of minerals. Your plants will love it and reward you handsomely.
2.There are certain foods that can be classified as Super Foods. These, by definition, are nutrient dense and should provide a wide range of nutrients and minerals. These super foods can help fill in the gaps that may be left by your normal diet.

So, do you want health? Begin by following the First Law of Natural Health and eat the food that supports your body's efforts to maintain a high degree of wellbeing.

Ellis Hein is an avid health enthusiast, a gardener, a writer, a woodturner and a home schooling parent. Contact Mr. Hein at ehein@health-helps.com for information about the other four laws of natural health.
